Paper Quilt Collage made from Marin IJ

20/20 Vision: Past, Present, Future

20/20 Vision: Past, Present, Future

Time to get back into blogging again. I would say an average of two people visit my blog each day and I guess I should try to keep them interested. Yes, kind of Ho-Hum I know. But I continue to hear how important and effective it is for people/artists to blog. Maybe I would feel more comfortable calling it my Blab. That’s probably already been taken.

Paper Quilt Collage

The image above actually represents what happened – more than I thought would happen. All members of ArtWorks Downtown were invited to submit one piece of their art for the Big fundraising Gala and 20 year celebration.  So, since everything would be accepted I decided to submit one of my paper quilt colleges. I was excited to see it was selected to be one of the images shown on the Gala invitation and was also later published in the Marin Independent Journal. Thanks to Vicki Larsen once again.

Mostly this is all encouraging me to continue my Paper Quilt Collage project.

Save the Stamp – Save Snail Mail

Snail Mail - Save the Snail

Snail Mail – Save the Snail

Last week I ordered postage stamps online to be delivered via Snail Mail. Now it has come to my attention that I will experience a personal loss when we no longer have a Post Office or Snail Mail. I believe there is still a huge population of people that love to write letters, mail letters and receive mail that is not email. The kind of mail delivered in person to your home or business. Just hearing the familiar sound of the mail truck pulling up and stopping at a mailbox can take many of us all the way back to childhood.

Forever Stamps - Snail Mail Forever

Forever Stamps – Stamps Forever

Postage stamps are Art. They are Collectable Art. Postage stamps are another example of paper being replaced by digital technology. Yes, we can still have email but let’s try to keep our mail “pretty” as long as possible and buy stamps. Save Snail Mail if we can.

This is just another WordPress project to help me explore and learn more about blogging.

The Lone Star quilt block is likely one of the most recognizable quilt patterns to Americans. It is also one of the oldest patterns, along with the Mariner’s Compass, Orange Peel, Job’s Trouble and Irish chain. But this is a pattern known by many names. There are variations of it with 6 points, 8 points (the most common design) or even more. Various Lone Star quilt pattern names are given to the pattern with a large central star, made up of diamond shaped fabric to form the star points from the center out. Often the colors are chosen and placed to form what appear to be concentric circles radiating around the center. It is placed in the center of the quilt top and can be appliquéd down to the background or pieced in. Sometimes other tiny stars are placed in the large blank areas surrounding the star, or flowers may be appliquéd in those areas.

Paper or Plastic?

American quilts were originally recycled fabric. I want to recycle classic paper periodicals and recognizable paper products into quilt collages. Paper is the other “Fabric of our Lives”.

Worlds Oldest Newspaper goes Digital

Worlds Oldest Newspaper goes Digital

We still read newspapers, write checks, keep road maps in our cars, check spelling in dictionaries, but we also continue to have more convenient options – faster more efficient ways of getting information and getting things done. New technology has become mainstream and we are leaving “everyday” paper landmarks behind. The function of paper is being replaced by computers and plastic.
The project would combine my “hands-on” art as well as strengthen my design skills. Taking my art to a level of contribution to our community. Art redefining classic icons in our past. These visions must be saved for future generations to see. They will provide an appreciation and knowledge for how we connected and communicated. Before “email” we mailed handwritten letters. Paper has enriched our lives in ways that deserve more credit.
Recycled art is a valuable contribution to our society as we all move away from the primary uses of paper. There is a place for nostalgia as we are reminded of how paper has been woven throughout our homes, communities and all social institutions. Preserve it as an art form.
